We need to be about understanding the entire journey. Any Recruiter worth their salt is focused on much more than just making the hire. Imagine if Columbia had RETAINED us all as customers & how much more successful they might have been.
The Columbia style days of too-good-to-be-true recruitment marketing are surely over. The more brand content they consume along their candidate journey, the more opportunity we have to cultivate highly invested job applicants (and eventually hires). With so many data-points at their fingertips, job-seekers can choose to invest time in employers' brands by choosing to consume our content. The Golden Age of Recruitment that I referred to in Part 1 of this Recruiting Evolution series is also a 'golden age' for job-seekers.
There was a time before the world wide web that we, Generation X, were easily duped. In the 70s/80s, we all signed up for Columbia's mail-order music club. I admit I did too. Who could resist the allure of eleven record albums or cassette tapes for just a penny? It would be stupid NOT to join, right? Then came the unsolicited, automatic monthly shipments (music they chose, not you), and months later the crash: a zero-income 13-year-old owing the club nearly a year’s allowance for unwanted Air Supply and Aerosmith tapes.
